Fitness Motivation How to Get Started

April 2017

I am super passionate about my workouts and they are something I VERY much look forward to. I plan my day around them and if I have to miss one, it throws my whole day and my mood off. I know crazy but true! Yes, I am one of those who still workouts out on vacation and when I travel, it just makes me feel good and sets a positive tone for my day. BUT I didn’t always feel this way & I wasn’t always motivated. Some very hard things in my life made me turn to fitness for help and it became a HUGE part of who I am now.

No, you do not need some big life event to make you fall in love with fitness but you do have to be open to it and fit it into your schedule. Since I LOVE to help motivate others to get MOVING, I want to give you some tips on how to get started, stay motivated, and maybe one day enjoy sweating it out.

Write down your WHY.

This is the driving force behind your workouts. Are you doing this to be healthier for your kids? To teach them healthy habits? To reduce the amount of medication your taking? This is not where you write down the number of pounds you want to lose, this is WAY more than that. This is what will motivate you on days you don’t feel like working out and it will push through the workout when it gets tough.

Write down your goals.

This is where the losing weight, toning, or losing inches comes in. Be specific and be realistic.

Write down HOW you will feel once you accomplish your goal.

Will you be more willing to jump in pictures w/family & friends? Will you have more self-confidence? Will you be taking less prescribed medications? Think of what you can accomplish, the possibilities are endless!

MAKE the time.

Look at your schedule and see where you have an extra 30 minutes to an hour. Yes, we are ALL busy and have a million things to do but what’s more important than your health? Seriously, stop with the “no time” excuse and make yourself a priority. Block off the time in your schedule/planner and let everyone around you know that is YOUR time.

Pick a workout you ENJOY.

This is key because this is what will keep you coming back. If you hate running, don’t force yourself to run. If you love to dance, find a dance studio or Zumba classes at the gym. Or, if you love strength training & weights, start by seeing what group fitness classes are offered at your nearest gym so you can learn proper form & new exercises. A lot of the time we have a vision of what we think we need to be doing, when in fact there are so many options out there that make working out more enjoyable!

Find an accountability partner.

Whether it’s your significant other, co-worker, or your mom, tell someone you are close to that you will be making working out a priority and ask them to hold you to it! Better yet, ask them to be your workout buddy and have them come with you. This is especially helpful if it’s your significant other because not only will you be getting healthy together, but you will be able to spend more time together and bond over the pain.

It’s NEVER too late to start creating a workout plan and live a healthier lifestyle. No matter what your goals are, you CAN achieve them. No, it’s not easy and it may be painful at first but it’s worth it. You will thank yourself later when you achieve that goal & you are proud of what you accomplished. You never know what you can achieve until you try and hey you have to start somewhere right?!
