A Healthier Way to Drink Wine
I’ve never given much thought about what EXACTLY is in the wine I drink, I know which kind I like and I love a good sale on the outskirts of the wine aisle, but that’s about it. Apparently, there is a lot more that goes into wine and it isn’t all good! Did you know there are 70 plus additives in wine made in the U.S. and there is no requirement to list these or other ingredients on the wine label?! I didn’t until I listened to this podcast on The Chalene Show when she interviewed the founder of Dry Farm Wines, Todd White. It was eye-opening and since listening to it, I haven’t looked at wine the same way. So of course I have to share this with you…my fellow wine lovers, Mama’s, and advocates of living a healthy lifestyle.
AND if you want to try a healthier wine, you can get a FREE bottle through my link at the end of the post so stay tuned!
What I Learned About the Wine Industry
The full podcast has more detail but here are a few facts I learned about the wine industry overall:
- The FDA approved 76 additives in the use of wine-making but we don’t know about them because the contents aren’t listed on the bottle. Why? Because wine is the largest major food product without a required contents label.
- Alcohol levels have been creeping up in wines in the past twenty years (near 15%) and that has a negative impact on our health, more so for women, by increasing cancer rates (recently I’ve heard more about the link between alcohol and cancer rates but haven’t researched it fully). The alcohol percentage stated on the bottle by law is NOT required to be accurate and is generally rounded down…WHAT?? Not that we always pay attention the alcohol percentage (let’s be real) but still, that seems a little shady to me, right?
- Natural wine contains one thing…fermented grape juice BUT less than 1% of wines in the world are natural.
So what is a better choice when it comes to wine?
Natural wine! I haven’t fully researched every natural wine company/wine type (some days I barely have time to take a shower! #momlife) BUT I was very impressed with all the knowledge Todd White (Founder of Dry Farm Wines) shared on the podcast and it pushed me to dig a little deeper and learn more about what I’m putting into my body. Here are a few things I learned about Dry Farm Wines:
- They Lab test EVERY bottle of wine for chemicals, additives, pesticides, and sugar
- Alcohol levels do not exceed 12.5%…which is plenty if you ask me!
- All their wines are tested for fructose and glucose levels to make sure they are statistically SUGAR-FREE, less than 1g/L. In my opinion, the less sugar we drink, the better!
- Dry Farm Wines do not contain any of the 76 additives
My Review and Your FREE Bottle!
Of course, I just HAD to try the wines for myself. I am a big fan! My mom, sister, and I all went in on an order of red wines (I can’t speak to the wine ones) and we have nothing but good things to say about it. Overall, the taste was great and very smooth (no harsh aftertaste you get with some wines), didn’t leave us with any headaches the next day, and we were pleased with the variety they offered. We love to enjoy a glass of wine and knowing it wasn’t filled with chemicals, additives, or sugar made us enjoy it even more. I’m currently enjoying my second shipment and I can’t wait to try some more!
I am a huge advocate of living a healthy lifestyle so I’ve partnered with Dry Farm Wines as an affiliate. As a thank you for reading my blog post and my review, I’m giving you a FREE bottle of wine with your first purchase. You get 7 bottles for the price of 6, who doesn’t love that?! Order here to claim your free bottle! It is a subscription based program but there is no obligation to continue if you don’t want to so you can cancel at anytime AND if you don’t like any of the bottles they send, they will replace or refund it with no questions asked. Love that! Yes, it’s probably more expensive than a bottle you would buy at the store (this was my first thought) BUT it’s the quality you are paying for and for me, knowing there isn’t as much of the “bad” stuff makes it worth it. It goes back to the “you get what you pay for” saying and I’m all about supporting businesses that are trying to produce cleaner, healthier products for us!
